A Talent for Trouble (Book Review)

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A talent for trouble 2I love Jen Turano’s witty writing and slapstick characters and she does not disappoint in her third novel, A Talent for Trouble.

As we follow the colorful cast of characters from Jen’s previous two novels, A Change of Fortune and A Most Peculiar Circumstance, which I have reviewed here on my blog, you’ll find the adventures continue here.

Miss Felicia Murdock has foolishly believed for years that she was destined to be a pastor’s wife and dressed and acted in a way that she thought would capture the heart of her desired mate. That dream crashed colorfully when that man married–another woman!  Sent to revive her spirits, Grayson Sumner, Lord Sefton finds himself involved in saving the beautiful woman from one scrape after another.

Grayson, however, is not devout and with a tainted past does not feel he could, in any way, be a suitor for Felicia’s hand. The only problem is, no one told his heart that. Felicia finds the nobleman to be an enigma. She delights in the fact that he does not tell her lies to placate her likes others have. But surely such an aggravating man could never be good husband material, could he?

Grayson’s past catches up with him and soon it is Lord Sefton who is in trouble. Will Felicia risk it all to help rescue him?

Not everyone will appreciate Jen’s unique voice but I personally love it and at times found myself laughing out loud at the antics of her characters or her way of turning a phrase. I also applaud Bethany for another beautiful cover that displays the spunk of the main character. I look forward to Jen’s fourth installment in this series and hope she has plans for more after that.

Fatal Judgement (Book Review)

Reading Time: 2 minutes

fatal judgementI love free books on Kindle because sometimes I find spectacular new favorites. I found Dee Henderson that way and now I’ve discovered the fabulous romantic suspense of Irene Hannon in her novel Fatal Judgement (Guardians of Justice, Book 1).

Jake Taylor is a U.S. Marshal who has been around the block and the world keeping people and countries safe. He’s recently transferred to St. Louis to be closer to family but has to hit the ground running when a murder happens at the home of a federal judge.  His new assignment is to provide protection for her: Liz Michaels, the widow of his best friend who he believes is responsible for his death. Regardless of his feelings he has a sworn duty to guard her life and he will, until warmer feelings start to interfere with his normal professional facade and defense against his own buried grief.

As they hunt down the killer, romance sizzles between the two but will the killer return and succeed where he failed before? Will Jake have the chance to tell Liz that he loves her before it’s too late?

Irene has done fabulous research and her characters are multi-layered and the plot is enough that I lost valuable sleep. Faith plays a role in the lives of the characters as they struggle to depend on God in the midst of deep grief and loss. This is the first in a series and I cannot wait to read the rest of them!

Sandwich with a Side of Romance (Book Review)

Reading Time: 2 minutes

sandwichI picked up Krista Phillip’s book, Sandwich with a Side of Romance free on Kindle and was so glad to stumble across such a witty and talented author.

Twenty year old Maddie Buckner has had a hard life but she’s starting over in a new town, Sandwich, in hopes of qualifying for custody of her eleven year old brother, Kyle, who is in foster care.

Nothing seems to go Maddie’s way, and it’s all the fault of the devastatingly handsome restauranteur, Reuben’s fault. It all started with him falling asleep while she was cutting his hair and things spiral down from there while the romance and temptation heats up. Throw in a jealous fiancee and you have the makings of drama and misadventure.

Maddie though has a new relationship with Jesus and doesn’t need a man in her life, much less anyone else. God seems bent on shower her just how much she does need the love and grace that others offer, along with their physical help in meeting her needs. Moving to Sandwich not only provides her with a job and an opportunity to start over, but new friends and a chance for the family she never had.

I don’t want to give any spoilers away but there were moments in this story that had me grinning and giggling and others that had me in tears at the heartache Maddie endured and felt she deserved. She learns a valuable lesson that God wipes away our sins and that we desperately do need the grace and love of other people in our lives because no one can make it on their own.

I loved the complexity of these characters and the humor as well. Krista has a unique voice in her writing and one I found to be engaging and hard to set aside. I look forward to reading more from her.  Kudos to Abingdon Press for putting a normal shaped woman on their cover, not some impossibly shaped size zero.

If the Shoe Fits (Book Review)

Reading Time: 2 minutes

What if a woman, let’s call her Julianne, had all the shoes she needed, and her Prince Charming was right under her nose? In If the Shoe Fits you have a clever modern adaptation of this fairy tale by author Sandra Bricker.

Julianne is If the shoe fitsdreamy and while working as an attorney hopes for God to reveal to her the man who will be her Prince Charming. As childhood friends and now attorneys in practice together, Julianne is still chasing after a fantasy as Will pines away for her right under her nose.

As Julianne mistakenly pursues the man she believes God has dropped into her path via a toolbox, a work boot and a dog, Will struggles to be supportive. Unrequited love is a hard cross to bear and when you work with someone, it can be even harder.

But is this man she thinks is Mr. Right, really all that in to her? Do looks equal soul mate? As Julianne pursues her perfect mate, Will struggles with whether he can stay to watch her fall in love with someone other than him. As the situation escalates and decisions are made, will Julianne ever realize that her Prince Charming is the man in the office across from hers? The one who has been there all along?

This is a sweet and sometimes funny story told in classic Sandra Bricker style. I will admit at some points I wanted to shake Julianne for being so delusionally dense and commiserate with poor Will. But the ending was worth it.

Kudos to authors: Carlene Havel, Bonnie McCune, Josie Riviera, Trinity Hart, Kim McMahill, Gay Lewis, Penelope Marzec, Kimberly B. Jackson, Karen Cogen, Jayna Morrow and Linda Carroll-Bradd obviously had some fun writing this.  Not all authors are represented in all three books. These novellas exemplify the beauty of that.

Undeniably Yours (Book Review)

Reading Time: 2 minutes

undeniably yoursI was disappointed that I couldn’t snag a free copy of Becky Wade’s Undeniably Yours to review, but there’s always the library! Yay! I loved Becky’s writing in My Stubborn Heart and she has been nominated for some pretty awesome awards for that novel.  Just rising to that level of awareness in this industry is an achievement in and of itself.  The thing is, Becky deserves it. She writes phenomenal contemporary romances.

Undeniably Yours is totally different from My Stubborn Heart. It is not a sequel but an entirely new story in its own right and written with just as much compelling drama and romance. Meg Cole had no desire to run her father’s oil business and had an agreement that for ten years she could do her own thing. His death shortened that dream and put her at the helm of a business she had no skills or knowledge about. With the advice of her many staff members, she starts by cutting costs and one of those cuts was the Thoroughbred racehorse farm that was her father’s pet indulgence.

Bo Porter had worked hard in partnership Whispering Creek Ranch to make the Thoroughbred Farm a profitable venture and he’s just about to break even when the blow comes. He’s been fired and he has to terminate everyone, sell the horses and close the farm. Something about Mr. Cole’s daughter intrigues him though and he refuses her termination. He negotiates for six months in hopes that maybe she’ll change her mind.

The last thing either of them anticipated was falling in love and the complexities that would ensue.  Throw a sociopathic ex-husband into the mix and Oil “royalty” and you have one major adventure!  With Bo’s job on the line and their relationship hanging in the balance, Meg seeks God’s guidance as to how to juggle the career she despises with the opportunities it provides. Danger lurks as Meg pursues her passions and finds that helping others puts her at risk.

Undeniably Yours is a well-crafted romance with beautifully drawn out characters will keep you reading and rooting for Meg and Bo and Becky Wade doesn’t leave you wanting with her happy ending. This is a book I hope to read again.

Th Chase and The Survivor (Book Reviews)

Reading Time: 2 minutes

I am new to the writing of seasoned author DiAnn Mills but am definitely a convert to her romantic suspense’s after reading The Chase and The Survivor.

the chaseIn the first book in the Crime Scene: Houston series, The Chase, Kariss Walker is an author who wants to write about a crime that had haunted her for years. She gains a favor from the FBI and manages to work with Special Agent Tigo Harris who is not too happy to be babysitting the annoying author, much less dig up a cold case that also gnawed at him. In the process of her research, they get the cold case reopened but the quest to find justice for the murdered child puts both their lives in danger.

survivorIn the second book, The Survivor, Kariss is recruited by a psychologist who was once brutally attacked and left for dead as a child. Dr. Amy Garrett wants her story told but suspects that doing so may flush out the murderer who accidently let her live when so many others died. Kariss had dated Tigo but had walked away from the relationship because of his lack of faith in Christ. They are drawn together as she diane millsonce again finds herself in the crossfire of a cold case turned hot.

I really enjoyed the action and attention to detail that DiAnn weaves into her stories. She obviously has done a lot of research and work with the FBI to be able to tell tales like this and that alone makes them fascinating.  They are filled with complexity and depth and rich characters and I fell in love with tough cop Tigo and too-stubborn-for-her-own-good, Kariss. I look forward to book number three. Please, DiAnn, say there will be one!

To Whisper Her Name (Book Review)

Reading Time: 3 minutes

To Whisper Her Name is as Post-Civil War Southern fictional story that takes place on a very real to life Belle Meade Plantation. That location is the star of the novel and a character in it’s own right.

to whisper her nameOlivia Aberdeen has suffered the humiliation of her brutal husband being branded a traitor to the South and publicly disgraced and murdered. Although ignorant of his misdeeds she is branded with the tint of scandal. Turned from her home she finds refuge at Belle Meade Plantation where her mother’s dearest friend lives. Unfortunately it is also a horse stud farm and Olivia is deathly afraid of horses.

Nothing goes quite as planned when Ridley Cooper comes to Belle Meade to learn about horses  from Bob Greene, a man he met during the war while fighting for the North. Having to keep his part in the war a secret while working with the stud farm and for a General for the Southern Army is a challenge for the strong-willed Ridley. But he hasn’t met strong until he’s run into the prim and proper widow, Olivia. As days turn into weeks and months, Ridley’s dreams of heading West are put on hold while Olivia fears she will once again be “sold” to another husband to help benefit the Belle Meade plantation.

This is a story rich in details and slow in laying out the story and it’s conflicts. It is well and beautifully written. The biggest boldest faith comes from the Negroes on the plantation, the rest is not quite as deep. It is a great look at how some white people, even after the war was lost in the south, were willing to start treating black people more as equals in some ways, but they had a long road to hoe to overcome years of racism.

I loved the characters of Ridley and Olivia. The book is long. It has a slow start. I’m horribly allergic to horses (not matter how beautiful I believe them to be), although I appreciate the painstaking parallels between the training of the thoroughbreds and the gentling of Olivia’s fears that Ridley undertook. The character of Grady and his  threats was a plot thread that was left hanging unresolved. When the end finally came it felt like it wound up too fast and I almost wished less time was spent earlier on to be able to more fully enjoy the way Ridley and Olivia finally connect. I felt a bit shortchanged in that regard after all the work in getting there.

If you want to live in the South, right after the civil war and see what life was like back then, this historical will do the job. Even though this reviewer is from the North, I do have to agree that much of what happened to decimate the South as part of that war was over and beyond what was necessary to win freedom from the slaves. This novel illustrates that suffering to a certain degree although taking place within the two years after the war I suspect the relationships illustrated between Negroes and Whites in this novel is an ideal and did not reflect reality (equal pay for a job?). Poetic, fictional license but it aided the story and the dignity that the former slaves deserved.

My Stubborn Heart (Book Review)

Reading Time: 2 minutes

This review was initially posted on Sept. 11, 2012 but I have reposted it here because it was one of the top five books in the Romance category of the INSPY awards of which I was a judge.

On a whim I had clicked to download a free ebook on amazon as I so often do – and yesterday My Stubborn Heart by Becky Wade just happened to be the book I decided to open and read.  It seems that lately every book I pick up by Bethany House, whether historical or contemporary romance – have been beautifully written and have touched my heart. This book is no exception.

Kate is on a break from her job as a social worker and on a three month stint to help her Grandmother restore an old family estate.  She has reached the advanced age of 31 with no husband and is constantly reminded of her lack by those around her – as well as the loneliness she feels deep inside. Yet she has determined and prayed that she would never settle for any man – but only the one God would have for her.

Matt has had a career as a hockey player, fame and beautiful wife. After his lovely bride died of cancer he walked away from everything he knew, even shutting out family and friends, to live a hermit’s life and live with his grief and subsequent anger at God for not answering his prayers. Accepting the job to work at renovating an old home, he shows up to work to find that there is an annoying woman who keeps coming by to talk. He doesn’t want to talk, he wants to be left alone.

Over time though Matt has a change of heart as Kate worms her way in with her light banter and teasing. She is not afraid to challenge him as she is determined to help him escape his self made prison. Definitely attracted to this “hottie” she feels that he is above her reach and tells herself they could only be friends. The heart doesn’t always listen to logic.

I don’t want to give any spoilers away, but I loved the challenge of this book as it looked spiritually at two key issues: 1) Can you trust a sovereign God with your prayers and that He, knowing what’s best will answer them in His perfect timing?  2) How far are you willing to go to obey Him?

This book is not preachy at all – but it deals with the honest gut-wrenching decisions we all at times have to face at the foot of the cross and as we deal with the painful realities of life. Becky Wade does a beautiful job weaving that all together in a compelling story.

God and Me and Sweet Iced Tea (Book Review)

Reading Time: 2 minutes

sweet iced teaNormally I post fiction books here on Fridays, but today I’m taking a departure from that to share with you a sweet devotional by Rose Chandler Johnson entitled God and Me and Sweet Iced Tea.

I was attracted to this because I often refer to my own time with God in the mornings as “God and me and a cup of tea.” But mine is spiced chai latte Hey, I’m a northern gal and while I like my tea sweet – I also like it hot and combined with other spices.

This devotional is also unusual because I’m still savoring it and enjoying it and it’s not like a normal book to read and review where I was able to finish it on time. Well, I could have, because the chapters are short and, yes, sweet. Rushing through though would defeat the purpose of letting a book like this help you reignite your walk with God.

Rose set’s this book up nicely with a scripture, devotional and then suggested readings and things to consider. I”m a gal who likes to journal and there is a little space in there for that. Probably not enough for me but since I have the e-book version, my thoughts go in my regular pencil and paper journal. It is followed by a brief prayer, a little “Sweet Tea Moment” and then a prayer focus.

I’m impressed at the simplicity but the depth of this devotional and if you need a little something special to spruce up your dates with God, then perhaps this will be your cup of tea!
